What is Dental Scaling and Polishing?

Dental scaling and polishing is a common dental procedure to remove plaque, tartar and stains from your teeth to keep them healthy and shiny! Scaling removes hardened plaque, also known as tartar while polishing removes the stains and plaque on your teeth to keep them looking pearly white.

These procedures help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral diseases.

Who Should Consider Dental Scaling and Polishing?

Dental scaling and polishing should be done by everyone every 6 to 12 months! Even if you brush really well, bacteria and food will still lodge in hard to reach areas, calcify and form tartar. A dentist can help remove tartar as they stick strongly to your teeth and cannot be removed by a toothbrush or floss.

If you have gum disease or recurrent tooth decay, the recommended recall period may sometimes be shorter to help prevent relapse of oral health issues.

You might need dental cleaning if you have any of the following symptoms:

Bleeding gums when brushing

Red, swollen, or painful gums

Bad breath (halitosis)

Stained or discolored teeth

What to expect from Dental Scaling and Polishing

Before the Procedure:

Your dentist will first examine your teeth and gums to check for any oral health issues. Dental Xrays will also be taken. If any underlying problems are found, they may need to be addressed before we proceed with scaling and polishing.

During the Procedure:

The procedure is typically quick and fairly comfortable. We use a special dental instrument that gentle vibrates plaque and calculus off your teeth. In some cases, you might experience minor bleeding, especially if your gums are already inflamed from gum disease. At our clinic, we use gentle machines with minimal vibrations and sound to make the dental experience as comfortable as possible.

After the Procedure:

There’s no downtime after dental scaling and polishing. You can go back to your regular activities immediately.

How does Dental Scaling and Polishing work?

Dental Scaling
Dentists use an ultrasonic or electromagnetic device to vibrate and remove larger pieces of tartar. A hand scaler may also be used for smaller deposits between your teeth and gums. These tools help remove any tartar buildup in areas that are difficult to reach.

Dental Polishing

After scaling, your dentist may use a Prophyjet machine to polish off the stains on your teeth. We may also polish your teeth with a slow-speed handpiece and a soft rubber cup. Both techniques are great and are chosen at the discretion of the dentist

At the end of the treatment, your dentist may apply a fluoride coat to give your teeth extra protection from cavities.

Benefits of Dental Scaling and Polishing

When combined with good oral hygiene, regular dental scaling and polishing can provide a wide range of benefits:

  • Improves oral hygiene: Keeps your teeth and gums clean and healthy.
  • Prevents gum disease: Helps avoid gingivitis and severe periodontal disease from developing
  • Detects problems early: We can see what is going on beneath the tartar and plaque and catch potential dental issues before they become too serious.
  • Maintains healthy teeth: Removes bacteria and food that cause tooth decay and reduces the risk of cavities.
  • Freshens your breath: Helps eliminate bad breath caused by plaque and food debris buildup.
  • Enhances your appearance: Makes your teeth look cleaner and brighter.

While those with thick and stubborn buildup of tartar may feel slight discomfort during the process, most find it painless. However, if you are feeling uncomfortable or are in pain, you should let your dentist know at once.

No, dental scaling and polishing will not damage your teeth. In fact, it protects your teeth and gums, as the tools used in the procedure only remove the tartar and stains from your teeth’s surface without damaging them.

Yes, dental scaling and polishing is still necessary even if you floss and brush your teeth regularly. While these good oral habits can get rid of plaque, tartar may still form in difficult-to-reach areas and can only be removed with professional teeth cleaning.
