Growth Modulation: Guiding Jaw Growth During Childhood

Growth modulation is a procedure where dental appliances are used to sculpt and mould the bone and faces of children. It is done to modify or manipulate a child’s jaw into a more natural, favourable position. When done early, growth modulation can correct deformities like underbites and overbites and perhaps even prevent the need for orthodontic treatment like braces or even surgery down the road.

Early Orthodontic Care for Growing Children

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry where teeth are moved to correct teeth misalignments. In Singapore, we have seen an increased uptake of orthodontics, the rise in number attributed to the pursuit of straight teeth and a confident smile. Whether you are looking for a dental solution for your child or to correct your own teeth, we have curated a detailed and holistic care plan for patients of all ages.

Gentle Nitrous Sedation for Anxious Children

Nitrous oxide is a mild, noninvasive sedative sometimes known as “laughing gas.” It is delivered to your child via gas mask and helps keep them relaxed while reducing their anxiety. They are not put to sleep; they will still be able to hear and respond to the dentist and move a little. While under its effects, they will also feel a little lightheaded and even a little silly. Nitrous oxide also wears out very quickly, allowing your child to resume regular activities.

    Paediatric Dentist in Singapore

As home to a dedicated paediatric dentist in Singapore, Le By An Dental focuses on gentle and specialised care for infants, toddlers, and children. Our paediatric dental team is trained to create a calm and comfortable environment, helping your child feel safe from their very first visit.

At Le By An Dental, our paediatric dentist in Singapore does more than just treating teeth. We help monitor your child’s oral development so that we can catch early signs of misaligned teeth and potential airway issues. Moreover, we guide your child to build dental habits early, supporting a lifetime of healthy smiles. We are delighted to welcome your child for a routine check-up, with the option of nitrous sedation for a more comfortable visit. Our paediatric dentist also provides early orthodontic guidance, working closely with parents and keeping them informed about their child’s progress every step of the way. The facial bones may also be sculpted by early intervention and modulation of facial growth.

Our clinic is also Baby Bonus approved, as we aim to make paediatric dental care more accessible for Singapore families.

When should I start taking my child to the kids dentist?

You can start taking your child to the dentist when they are around 6 months or after their first set of teeth appears. Regular dental visits and good oral hygiene practices are crucial for maintaining your child’s oral health and preventing potential issues before they become problematic. Remember, prevention is always better than dealing with problems later on! Book an appointment with us today!

What Happens During Your Child’s First Dental Visit?

At first, children will have an initial consultation to examine the general health of their teeth, gums and jaw development. Our paediatric dentist will recommend any necessary treatments based on the child’s dental condition. We’ll do a simple dental cleaning before the end of the dental visit. Tooth decay or crooked teeth will be diagnosed at the first visit. Further appointments will be made if there are any subsequent needs.

Why should I take my child to a paediatric dentist?

Your child’s first set of teeth, also known as primary or milk teeth, plays a vital role in their overall well-being. Strong and healthy primary teeth are essential for proper chewing, clear speech, and an aesthetically pleasing smile.

A kid’s dentist can offer valuable guidance on cultivating good oral habits and how to effectively brush and floss your child’s teeth. They perform professional dental cleanings and thorough check-ups to prevent potential issues, such as identifying decay or abnormalities early on. Paediatric dentists can address any unfavourable oral habits in your child and create personalised oral healthcare programmes to improve and maintain optimal oral hygiene.

Furthermore, they advise parents on cleaning their infant’s teeth using specially designed toothbrushes and offer nutritional tips, such as limiting sugary liquids, especially before bedtime. Visiting a kid’s dentist early on can set your child on the path to a lifetime of healthy oral habits and a bright smile.

Why is it important to take my child to the kids dentist early?

When you bring your child to the dentist early and regularly, they will gradually become more comfortable with the experience, and dental visits will become less intimidating. Dental fear and anxiety often stem from negative early dental experiences, which can persist into adulthood if not addressed.

A children dentist is specially trained to help young children feel at ease during dental visits. They use simple and gentle steps to familiarise children with the dental chair and dental tools, making the experience enjoyable for your child. Soon enough, your child may even look forward to their routine dental visits!

How often should my child visit the kids' dentist?

While there is no strict rule, it is generally recommended that you take your child to the dentist every six months. However, your dentist will assess your child’s dental condition and behaviour in the clinic to suggest a personalised schedule of visits.

Regular dental check-ups for your child can prevent serious dental issues, save time and money in the long run, and maintain good oral health, essential for eating, speaking, and confidence.

As children grow, their teeth and jaws undergo significant changes. A paediatric dentist is specially trained to address these developmental processes and cater to the unique needs of growing mouths. By working together, we can monitor your child’s growth and development and ensure they transition into a healthy and confident young adult!

What should I not do as a parent wanting to bring my child to a dentist?

Refrain from using adult terminology such as “pain”, “drill”, “needle”, and “injection” when talking to your child.

Refrain from bribing your child into going to the dentist or turning dental visits into a punishment.

Do not tell your child scary stories about dental visits, as this can instil fear and deter them from wanting to visit the dentist.

What should I do as a parent wanting to bring my child to a dentist?

Approach it with an open mind, as treating a child differs from treating an adult.

Remember to bring your child’s toothbrush and toothpaste for their dental visit.

Set a good example for your child by demonstrating proper dental hygiene and healthy diet choices.

Accompany your child for their first dental visit instead of having other relatives take them.

Inform the dentist and dental staff about any special or medical needs your child may have when scheduling the first appointment. This will help ensure their dental experience is comfortable and tailored to their requirements.

    Your Dental Questions Answered

    What is a paediatric dentist?

A paediatric dentist is a specialist with the expertise and qualifications to care for children’s teeth, gums, and mouth from infancy through adolescence. They are committed to the oral health of your little ones and are equipped to understand children’s psychological and physical development. Paediatric dentists provide age-appropriate care tailored to each child’s unique needs. They are trained to examine and treat children in ways that make them feel at ease and even enthusiastic about being in the dental chair!

Is there any government subsidy for my child’s dental treatment?

Yes! In Singapore, the government provides subsidies through various schemes and Le By An Dental is an approved clinic under the Baby Bonus Scheme. For patients covered by Integrated Shield plans with riders for private hospital care, we can assist you in obtaining the Letter of Guarantee (LOG) or Pre-Authorisation Certificates for seamless cashless payment on your procedure day.

How can I detect defective teeth in babies?

Parents need to watch for the common signs of defective teeth such as discolouration, chipped teeth, unusual swelling and bleeding in gums or when children are not keen on eating or chewing.

When should a kid have their first teeth cleaning?

Parents are recommended to bring their kids for dental cleaning within 6 months after the first tooth appears or by the age of 1. This will also help the child acclimate to a happy dental environment.

What should I do if my kid's teeth are knocked off or broken?

If your kid’s tooth is broken or chipped, clean the area by rinsing their mouth with warm water and applying gentle pressure with gauze to stop bleeding. If you can find the chipped part of the tooth, keep it in a ziplock bag and seek out a paediatric dentist as soon as possible. Sometimes we are able to glue the chipped portion back into place.

If your kid’s permanent tooth is knocked out, attempt to put it back in the gum and its original position. Once replanted, bite on handkerchief and go to the dentist immediately.
If you feel uncomfortable doing it, please keep the permanent tooth in FRESH milk and seek professional assistance from a children’s dentist.
