What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts inserted into your jawbone under the gums. These posts act as sturdy foundations for attaching fake teeth (implant crowns) helping restore your smile, the ability to eat and speak comfortably.

Who needs dental implants?

Dental implants are a great solution if you have teeth or have teeth that cannot be saved. In order for dental implants to last and be successful, good health is very important. Not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants. The suitability depends on factors like bone structure, your medical history, and the type of bone you have.

Dental implants may not be right for you if you:

Have poor quality jawbone, or if there is not enough volume for the jawbone

Are pregnant or breastfeeding (temporary)

Have certain health conditions, such as severe osteoporosis, uncontrolled diabetes, or immune system issues, This may affect the healing after the implant procedure. There is a higher chance the implant does not stick to your jawbone properly.

Smoke heavily. Studies show the success rate of implants goes down when a person smokes heavily

Have active gum disease. The bacteria from the gums may infect the implants

If you’re unsure whether dental implants are right for you, book an appointment to discuss your options.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

If you need a tooth extracted, you have several options. Here's why dental implants are often the best choice:

Leave the space empty

This might be okay for a back tooth that doesn’t affect chewing, but it may not be ideal if it is a front teeth and you care about how you look!

Wear A Denture

A removable, temporary solution that doesn’t permanently restore function. It also uncomfortable and you have to take it off at night.

Get a bridge

This involves trimming the adjacent teeth to support a fake tooth in the middle, much like a bridge. While it’s a fixed solution, do bear in mind we have to trim down your healthy teeth to hold the back tooth.

Do Orthodontics

If your teeth are crowded, it’s possible to move them to close the space left by the missing tooth.

Dental implants

The best long-term option if you’re healthy and have enough bone for the implant. They function very much like natural teeth. They exist as an independent unit and do not affect your neighbouring teeth.

If you have any of the conditions above, make an appointment for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

Before placing dental implants, we use advanced CBCT scans to get a clear and safe picture of your jaw. These scans help us plan the perfect placement, making sure we avoid any important nerves or blood vessels.

On the day of the procedure, we will play your favourite music and will numb the area to keep you comfortable. Titanium posts will be placed into the jawbone where your missing teeth used to be. If the missing tooth is in the back of your mouth, a temporary healing cap is placed to cover the implant to protect the implant while it heals.

After the post is placed, your jawbone will take about 2 to 4 months to heal and fuse with the titanium post. A new implant crown will then be locked into the implant post. In some cases, we can place an immediate implant (right after tooth extraction) and even a temporary crown in the same visit, which shortens your treatment time.

At An Dental, we offer this option of immediate implants and loading so you can leave our office with a new bionic tooth! Whether we can use this approach or not depends on existing factors like your bone structure and bite, which we will carefully evaluate during your consultation.

What to Do After Dental Implant Surgery

Rest & Activity

After surgery, it’s important to rest for 2 days after the procedure. For about 1 week, avoid physical activities, and try not to touch or pull down your lip to look at the surgery area. It is important that the wound is stable and heals well.

Medications

You may experience some discomfort after the anaesthetia wears off. Your dentist will give you painkillers. Be sure to take the medications as instructed and drink plenty of water to prevent any stomach upset. Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills while taking your medications.

Swelling

Swelling is a common response after surgery and might increase during the first few days. To help reduce swelling, apply an ice pack gently to the side of your face where the surgery was done (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off). The day after surgery, you can switch to a warm, moist cloth or heating pad to continue easing the swelling.

Bleeding

Some light bleeding at the surgical site is normal for the first 24 hours after surgery. If you notice slight bleeding, gently apply gauze to the area for 20 minutes. If the bleeding continues, try a moistened tea bag for 30 minutes. If you can’t stop the bleeding, call our office at 85889868.

Diet

After surgery, avoid eating right away, and steer clear of hot, spicy, hard, or crunchy foods. Don’t chew on the side of your mouth where the surgery was performed. Stick to soft foods like eggs, soups, and milkshakes for the first few days. Also, avoid using straws. The pressure from sucking on a straw can dislodge the blood clots on the palate.

Oral Hygiene

For the first few days, do not brush your teeth in the area where the surgery was performed. Continue brushing your other teeth as usual. If you’ve been prescribed a Chlorhexidine rinse, start using it twice a day to help with healing.

Other Important Tips

Your body will form a clot at the surgical site during healing. This clot is important for the healing process, so avoid heavy exercise, spitting, smoking, or using straws. These actions could dislodge the clot and lead to bleeding.

Bone Grafts

In some cases, CT scans or clinical assessments may reveal that you have insufficient bone to support the dental implant. In such cases, a bone graft procedure will be necessary to enhance the bone volume for the implant.

The bone graft will be performed in our comfortable operation suite. If you feel anxious or nervous, you have the option to choose sedation in our sedation-friendly rooms, and you will awake from a deep sleep in our “heal” room. This ensures your comfort and a smooth experience during the procedure.

What is a bone graft?

A bone graft is a procedure performed to increase the volume of bone. The graft can be taken from various sources, such as:

  • Autogenous graft: taken from your own bone.
  • Allograft: bone taken from another person.
  • Xenograft: bone taken from external porcine or bovine sources.

Alloplast: bone graft from non-living material and is typically particulate in nature.

Who needs a bone graft?

Bone grafts are usually performed when there is a need to increase the volume of bone to support a dental implant.

Why do bone grafts?

For dental implants to be successful, they require firm anchoring in a healthy bone. If the CT scan reveals insufficient bone, bone volume must be increased before implant replacement. Hence, bone grafts are performed to increase this volume.

How are bone grafts done?

How are bone grafts done

Before a bone graft procedure, a CT scan is performed to determine the extent of bone loss; you will then discuss the suitable bone graft material with your dentist. Once the bone graft material has been selected, your procedure will begin.

During the procedure, your dental surgeon will apply a numbing cream and inject you to numb the area. The gums will be teased open, and small holes will be created in the bone bed to enhance bleeding. The chosen bone graft will be carefully placed in the area, and a membrane (usually made of collagen) may be used to secure it. The gums will be stitched back into place.

Creating these small holes in the bone promotes blood flow, facilitating the formation of a stable blood clot that will eventually transform into new bone, combining with your natural bone to increase bone volume. Bone particulate grafts are a common technique used in this process.

Post operative care for dental implants and bone grafts

If you have received a temporary implant crown, avoid using it to chew on anything, as it is for aesthetics until the permanent crown is placed.
