What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are like little hats that cover damaged or weak teeth to protect them. They help restore the tooth’s shape, strength, and appearance. Your dentist customizes the crown to fit perfectly over your tooth, making it look natural and helps it function just like your other teeth. After a crown procedure, you can use that damaged tooth to bite again!

What Happens During a Dental Crown Procedure?

Here’s what you can expect when getting a dental crown:

Check-Up and Preparation

Your dentist will take a close look at your tooth and decide if it needs a crown. If the damage is minor, a filling may suffice. However, if the tooth is at risk of fracture because the remaining tooth structure is fragile; the dentist will continue to gently remove any damaged parts of your tooth and reshape the tooth structure so the crown will fit comfortably.

Digital Scan or Impression

Next, your dentist will take a digital scan or impression of your prepared tooth. This impression of the tooth is sent to a lab, and a custom crown is fabricated.

Temporary Crown

While your permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth. Please remember that this temporary crown is very fragile and can break easily. Go easy on your temporary crown avoid chewing hard food.

Crown Placement

When your custom crown is ready, your dentist will make sure it fits well and looks great before bonding it to your tooth.

Final Adjustments

Once the crown is in place, your dentist will check your bite to make sure everything feels good and comfortable.

Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Not every damaged tooth needs a crown, but it may be a suitable option for some cases, such as if you have:

A large cavity that is too extensive for a filling

A cracked or fractured tooth that is at risk of further damage

A tooth weakened by a large existing filling

A tooth that is worn down from grinding or erosion

A tooth that has just undergone root canal treatment

If you have any of these, you may book a consultation with our dentists for a proper assessment. While not every case requires a crown and may be addressed with a filling, our dentist will recommend a conservative option for your specific condition.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns offer many great benefits, such as:

  • Tooth Protection: Crowns keep your teeth safe from further damage. If a crack is present, the crown will help hold the cracked parts together.
  • Restore Tooth Shape: If a tooth is broken or damaged, a crown can restore it to it’s natural glory!
  • Better Smile: Crowns are designed to blend in with your natural teeth, giving you a brighter, more confident smile.
  • Long-Lasting: With good care, crowns can last for many years, even up to 30 years!
  • Feel Confident: With a crown, you can smile and talk with more confidence in any situation.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are different kinds of dental crowns, each suited to different needs:

Porcelain Crowns

These look very natural and are often used for front teeth.

Metal Crowns

Made from gold or alloy, these are super strong and work well for back teeth.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

These combine the strength of metal with the beauty of porcelain.

All-Ceramic Crowns

These crowns are made completely of ceramic or porcelain, providing a great, natural look without metal.

Zirconia Crowns

These are strong and look great, making them a popular choice for many people. This is a very good material for the back molar teeth as they are hardy and provide good long term functionality while chewing.

Dental Crown Cost in Singapore

A tooth crown in Singapore typically costs from $1500 to $2800 per tooth. Do note that the pricing may vary based on the crown material and complexity of your case. In general, metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns tend to be more affordable. Meanwhile, all-ceramic and zirconia crowns may have a higher cost due to their more natural appearance and durability.

How to Take Care of Your Crown

Here are some tips for your crown to last longer:

Brush and Floss Regularly

Keeping up with your brushing and flossing habits helps your crown stay clean and prevents tooth decay underneath the crown.

Avoid Hard Foods

Be careful not to chew on hard things like ice, nuts, or candy that could chip your crown.

Watch for Stains

Even though crowns resist stains, a lot of dark coloured drinks or food like coffee, soy based foods or red wine can make the edges of your crown change color.

In cases where a tooth has been root canal treated, the crown procedure would be relatively painless even without local anaesthesia. However, if the crown is done on a vital tooth, local anaesthesia would be given prior to the preparation of the tooth to make it painless and comfortable for the patient.

Dental crowns are designed to protect any damaged tooth/teeth you have to decrease any pain or discomfort felt. However, it is important to note that the crowned teeth can still cause pain and become infected just like normal teeth. If you experience any pain, your dentist will be able to help alleviate it through medication or follow-up treatment.

It is recommended to wait at least 60 minutes after your crown has been cemented before eating anything. During the first 24 to 36 hours, do strictly avoid foods that are hot, sticky, or chewy. Likewise, avoid hard foods such as nuts, chips, or bagels as these can either chip the dental crown or fracture your own tooth.

Removing a permanent crown can be more challenging as the process would involve sectioning the existing crown before it can be removed.

With the right care, crowns can last anywhere from 15 to 30 years. That means with regular check ups and healthy habits, your crown can protect your tooth for many years to come!

The cost of a tooth crown in Singapore generally ranges from $1500 to $2800, depending on the material used and tooth condition.

Before getting a tooth crown, it should be noted that there will be a permanent removal of a portion of the natural tooth structure. This helps make room for the crown, and is irreversible. Crowns may also be sensitive to temperature for a few days after placement. If not properly cared for, there is a risk of decay at the edges where the crown meets the natural tooth. However, our dentist will advise you on how to properly care for the crown through regular brushing, flossing, and check-ups, which may help minimise these risks.
